With Halloween just a little over a month away, it seemed like the perfect time to cover one of the spookiest ghost stories to ever come out of Mississippi. Read on to learn more about Mississippi’s most terrifying ghost story.

It was a rainy Friday night in the 1970s, and Hal was on his way to meet his family at a hotel in Gautier. Unfortunately, it would be the last time anyone saw him or his family alive.

Earlier that day, Hal had been laid off from his job at a local shipyard. The devastating news of losing his job was just too much for Hal to bear and he snapped.

Rather than break the news to his family, Hal chose to do something much more heinous. He met his family at the hotel, waited until his wife and five children were asleep, and then murdered them with an axe. But that wasn't all Hal had planned. He then went from room to room, killing other unsuspecting guests.

After completing his evil act, Hal began wandering aimlessly down Highway 90. Either completely out of it or, perhaps overcome with guilt, Hal eventually walked out into the highway and was ran over. He died instantly. But the story of Hal and his family doesn’t end there.

Supposedly, the ghost of Hal still haunts a portion of Highway 90 in Gautier. They say he can still be seen walking along the highway; however, that's not the only place you'll find Hal.

Hal, his wife, and five children are buried at the Garden of Hope Cemetery in Gautier, which is considered one of the most haunted in the country. Hal's five kids have been seen playing among the tombstones on several occasions; however, one of the children, Cheryl Anne, has been consistently spotted. Described as a "friendly ghost," she appears to be about 10-12 years old and wears a 1960s-style dress. Cheryl Anne often greets visitors at the cemetery, even holding their hands or offering to carry their flowers. Throughout the years, numerous photographs of Cheryl Anne have been captured, as well as an EVP of the young ghost, saying "Hope you'll come back and see me soon."

The spirit of Hal has also been seen in the cemetery. According to legend, Hal’s ghost often climbs from his grave, steals flowers and wreaths from other gravesites, and then returns to his grave with the loot.
