The Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge is a beautiful little wildlife refuge that’s been a local favorite since 1975. The 19,000-acre refuge is practically a playground for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts, and it’s one of the best places to see pitcher plants in Mississippi. What are pitcher plants? Read on to find out:
As you may have guessed the wildlife refuge is home to many sandhill cranes.
These adorable critters were once on the verge of extinction. Since the refuge was created in 1975, the population has grown from 30 to nearly 150. While the Mississippi sandhill crane is still on the endangered list, this refuge helps ensure they have a safe habitat to thrive in.
There are a few different trails within the refuge, and the C.L. Dees Nature Trail is one of our favorites.
