The Onward Store is one of the most unique restaurants in Mississippi, and that’s because it’s not just a restaurant. It’s also a general store and, above all, a historic landmark that opened back in 1913. However, it’s not just The Onward Store’s age that makes it a historic landmark. There’s also the fact that a history-making event occurred at the very spot the store now stands.
Rolling Fork is a small town with a rich history, and you can get a taste of that history at The Onward Store.
Nestled along Highway 61, the rustic shop opened its doors in 1913, and aside from a short closure between 2019 and 2021, it’s been serving patrons ever since.
It’s pretty remote; however, the location is actually part of its allure – and that’s because it’s where President Theodore Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear, which, in turn, led to the creation of the teddy bear.

The Onward Store isn’t the only place you can immerse yourself in the state’s bear-related history. There’s also this unique museum in Mississippi, which houses the world’s largest collection of teddy bears.
