It’s no secret that Mississippi is an excellent state for gorgeous natural swimming holes but some of the swimming holes are so special that they can’t be kept secret for long! One of these awesome swimming holes is Tombigbee Lake State Park. If you are looking to take a dip in the great state of Mississippi this is one you can’t miss!
Before the establishment of this forest as a National Forest and State Park, much of the land surrounding Tombigbee was abandoned farmland which was rapidly eroding. Thankfully, the gorgeous rolling hills of the area are now covered with pine and hardwood forests. They are rich with wildlife and intermingled with cozy private farms and woodlots.
Located just six miles away from Tupelo, this area is better known for its connection to Elvis Presley’s hometown, the bi-annual Tupelo Furniture Market, held in February and August, and the headquarters of the Natchez Trace Parkway.
Other than swimming, some of the recreational facilities you can find at Tombigbee Lake State Park include picnic areas with tables and grills, pavilions, meeting rooms and banquet facilities at the visitor center, children's playground, multi-use field, volleyball, nature trails, mountain biking trails, legendary disc golf, and fishing.
This park is gorgeous year-round so if you want to spend even more time at this gorgeous park there are several overnight options. The park offers 20 developed campsites for RVs or tents, a primitive camping area, 7 cabins, 1 cottage, and a group camp facility.
If you are coming from Highway 78, take Veterans Blvd. to Hwy 6 to State Park Road. Otherwise, take highway 45, then take Eason Blvd. to Hwy 6 to State Park Road six miles southeast of Tupelo.
The secret is out about Tombigbee Lake State Park and you can’t miss it if you are looking to cool off or practice your strokes! Reserve a campsite and find out more at Mississippi Wildlife Fisheries and Parks. Have you ever been swimming at Tombigbee State Park? Let us know in the comments!
