When you want to get in touch with nature, a Mississippi state park is the perfect destination. However, if you want to get in touch with nature while avoiding crowds, you’ll need to steer clear of popular parks, like Tishomingo State Park. That’s okay, though, because Mississippi is home to a spectacular state park that’s so little known, that crowds are the exception – rather than the norm. You’ll practically have the entire place to yourself.
Shepard State Park in Gautier may be one of the state’s lesser-known parks, but it’s got a lot to offer.
The park’s newest trail, a marsh walk, opened in 2021. Offering a unique learning experience, it’s comprised of 1,000 feet of the pier and includes informative signage about local birds, gators, and grasses.
In 2021, Shepard State Park celebrated another milestone – the opening of its new welcome center.
Housed in a historic log cabin, the welcome center features restrooms, meeting rooms, and a general store stocked with things like snacks, drinks, firewood, clothing, and more.
The park’s perks aren’t limited to its campgrounds or new additions, though.
An archery range, disc golf course, dog park, picnic areas, a boat launch, and outdoor BBQ pits are also among the many amenities afforded to visitors.
