You can pick up sweet treats just about anywhere, but if you’re looking for a truly unique dessert experience, you have to visit the Velvet Cream or, as locals call it, the Dip. In business for decades, the “walk-up fast food joint” offers plenty of retro appeal, in addition to a bevy of mouthwatering desserts, burgers, and more. A Hernando legend, the Velvet Cream is a must-visit. Take a look.
Originally known as "The Dippity Doo," Velvet Cream is located at 2290 Highway 51 S in Hernando.
Still owned by the same family, Velvet Cream was first opened in 1947. At that time, walk-up fast food restaurants were extremely popular, especially among teenagers – and Velvet Cream was no exception.
There’s a drive-thru, but if it’s your first visit, you’ll want to use the walk-up window to place your order, so you can take your time looking over the menu. And you’ll need plenty of time because it’s pretty extensive.
The burgers, which are one of the restaurant’s specialties, include standard options as well as unique creations, like the Russian Burger, which comes topped with fried pickles.
If you’re feeling adventurous, attempt the Big Dipper Challenge. The epic eating challenge requires consuming a 2-pound burger, order of bacon cheese fries, and a 60 oz. shake.
