Since numbers have a way of really putting things into perspective, we decided to compile a list of interesting numerical facts that pertain to Mississippi. From area attractions to remarkable state history, these 11 facts about Mississippi are bound to pique your interest.
1. Mississippi covers a total area of approximately 48,400 square miles, which is roughly 1,000 times the size of Disney World.
2. Mississippi’s Woodall Mountain stands at 806 feet tall. If you went (approximately) that distance in the opposite direction, you’d reach the deepest point of Lake Ontario.
4. Since 1921, Mississippi has won the Miss America pageant four times. To put that into perspective, 19 states have never won, and larger states such as New York and California have each won six times.
7. In 2005, Mississippi produced 350 million pounds of catfish. To put that into perspective, 350 million pounds is about four fifths the weight of the Sears Tower.
9. When America was thrust into World War II, the small town of D’Lo made a huge sacrifice. Of the town’s 400 residents, 150 volunteered to go to war, which means that 35% of the town enlisted. This percentage surpassed every town in the entire country.
10. Several years ago, Humphreys County devoted 20,600 water acres to catfish production. If those were land acres, they would be about one half the area of Washington D.C.
