Though Daniella was born in New York and has lived in a couple of other states, Mississippi has been her home for more than 30 years. After graduating from the University of Southern Mississippi, Daniella began to hone her writing skills through various internships. In the years since, she’s had the privilege of having her articles appear in several publications, such as the Mississippi-based Parents & Kids Magazine. She’s also had the honor of interviewing actress Sela Ward for The Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Experience.
You never know what you’ll find hiding on the back roads of rural Mississippi. For instance, most residents are completely unaware there is an incredibly rare monastery tucked away in Panola County. Even better, you can actually visit the unique site. Take a look:
The Magnolia Grove Monastery is located in the small town of Batesville, near the Mississippi and Tennessee border.
Rather unique, it’s one of only three monasteries in the U.S. under the spiritual guidance of Thich Nhat Hanh. The others are in New York and California.
Just to give you a bit of background, Thich Nhat Hanh is a world famous spiritual leader, poet, and activist. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a big fan of Thich Nhat Hanh and referred to him as "an apostle of peace and nonviolence."
Held twice a week on Thursdays and Sundays, Days of Mindfulness allow guests to "practice the art of mindful living" through a Dharma talk, walking meditation, silent meal, and a group discussion.
There is no charge to attend a Day of Mindfulness; however, a donation of $15 - $25 per person is suggested. Additionally, reservations are only required if you come with a group of five or more. To view the day’s complete schedule, click here.
Just as the names imply, themed retreats focus on specific topics or events, while the personal retreats offer individuals, families, and small groups the chance to practice with the monks.
Keep in mind, you must pre-register at least one week in advance for any retreat. While the retreat is free, the monastery does charge for overnight accommodations. Prices range from $25 - $75, depending on age, accommodations type, etc. For more information, click here.
