The next time you’ve got a day to kill, we’ve got the perfect destination for you – Poplarville. It’s a tiny town; however, it’s definitely not lacking in the “things to do” department. In fact, we’ve got a whole day’s worth of fun planned out, which means all you’ve got to do is hop in the car and prepare for a busy day in small-town Mississippi. Take a look:
Kick off your Poplarville excursion with a visit to the local donut shop, Popa’s Donuts. The quaint little shop serves up some of the best homemade donuts, but that’s not all. The tasty selection also includes other fresh-baked goods, such as sausage croissants.
Next stop, Main Street Coffee Co! Nestled in the heart of Poplarville, the coffee shop serves up locally roasted brew and fresh-baked muffins and cookies. The lunchtime fare is just as tantalizing and includes homemade chicken salad and grilled cheese sandwiches.
While your food digests, head on over to the Poplarville Chamber of Commerce. In addition to a helpful staff, you’ll find maps of the city along with other informative publications.
Like most small towns, Poplarville has a charming Main Street lined with shops, including Apples Ltd. Locally owned and operated since 1968, Apples Ltd. carries a variety of women's, men's, and juniors clothing, as well as suits, workwear, jewelry, shoes, and accessories. Way Out West (a gift shop) and Luna’s Cosmetics are also among Poplarville’s options for retail therapy.
When your stomach starts rumbling, don’t worry – Poplarville has got some great eateries. One such eatery is the Way Out West Grill. The grill is part of the gift shop that was previously mentioned, which means you can shop and dine in one place. Of course, the Way Out West Grill isn’t the only dining option. There’s also Deb’s Pasta and Pizza, Fiorella’s, which serves up seafood, El Mariachi, and more.
If you manage to save room for dessert, you’re in luck – and that’s because Poplarville is home to an old-fashioned soda fountain. The charming sweet shop is tucked away inside the town’s pharmacy, Pearl River Drug, and serves up a slew of treats.
After cruising around Poplarville, you’ll likely have to put some gas in your car. If that’s the case, a visit to Hall’s Service Station is in order. In business since 1960, the service station is authentically retro – right down to the fact that an attendant pumps your gas for you!
Make the most of your full gas tank by taking a driving tour of Pearl River Community College, the oldest community college in Mississippi. One of the campus’ newest and most notable features is the Brownstone Center for the Arts. The $10.5 million facility serves as a venue for plays, musical performances, and more. Check the Brownstone’s website prior to your trip to Poplarville, and maybe you can catch a show while in town.
Should you visit Poplarville during blueberry season, you can check out some of the local blueberry farms, which include JD Farms, Pearl River Blues Berry Farm, and Blueberry Farms and Tours.
