Halloween is just around the corner, which means you’ve probably already begun making plans to have some frightening fun. A visit to a haunted house is likely one of the first ideas that comes to mind. But this year, why not take things up a notch and tour an entire haunted city? And not just any city. We’re talking about Vicksburg – one of the most haunted cities in the state. Keep reading to learn more about the bone-tingling tour.
The Haunted Vicksburg tour company offers several tours, including the Haunted Vicksburg Ghost Walk and the Haunted Venues Tour.
Though a great visit during Halloween, the tours are available year-round.
Founded in 1811, Vicksburg is one of the most historic cities in America. It’s also one of the most haunted, so the tours are packed with spook-tacular stories and eerie sites.
According to the website, "The Trail of Tears, antebellum duels, yellow fever epidemics, and a 47-day siege have left old Vicksburg with quite a legacy of unfinished business and restless spirits."
The ghost walk, which is available on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., begins at the corner of the Old Court House Museum. It’s $18 for adults, $13 for kids 6 - 12, and FREE for kids 5 and under.
Don’t let the "walking" part discourage you. The tour is done at a "leisurely" pace and there are places to sit down and take a break along the way.
Another tour option is the Haunted Venues Tour. The 90-minute driving tour, which includes stops at four of Vicksburg’s most haunted neighborhoods, promises "even more history and mystery."
Along the way, you’ll hear bone-tingling tales, including that of a vanishing steamboat, a long-standing curse, a neighborhood with a dark past, and more.
The Haunted Venues Tour is offered Monday – Thursday at 8 p.m. It’s $23 for adults, $18 for kids 6 - 12, and FREE for kids 5 and under.
The tour begins at the Outlets of Vicksburg 4000 South Frontage Road. Additionally, it can be adapted for bad weather and for those with limited mobility. Keep in mind, while this is a driving tour, it does involve some light walking.
Whichever tour you choose, remember to bring your camera (and your courage).
