Steeped in history and lore, China Grove Methodist Church is easily among the state’s most intriguing sites. Not only is it one of the oldest churches in south Mississippi, but it’s practically all that remains of the historic China Grove settlement. With so much history, it’s not too surprising that the chapel is believed to be haunted. Take a look:
China Grove Methodist Church is located alongside a stretch of highway in the small town of Tylertown.
Construction on the church began in 1854 and was completed in 1861 for a cost of $100. Today, it’s touted as one of South Mississippi’s oldest churches.
Signs of the building’s age can be found in its construction. For instance, the large framing timbers in the attic are secured with hand-crafted techniques – no nails.
Today, the church and a couple of old homes are all that remain of China Grove. Because of its historical significance, the church is listed on the National Historic Register.
There are a couple of eerie stories surrounding the chapel. One of the most repeated tales involves a picture of Jesus inside the church, which is said to cry tears of blood.
But it’s not just the interior of the church that’s believed to be haunted. According to legend, the graveyard and fields surrounding the church are haunted by the ghost of a man, who was killed by his tractor.
