Although usually peaceful and beautiful, cemeteries can sometimes be a bit creepy, especially when loaded with tales of supernatural happenings. And that’s exactly the case with these Mississippi cemeteries. Dating back decades, these 8 graveyards are filled with a ton of history and some extremely active spirits.
1. Asbury Cemetery, Houston
Located down a long, narrow dirt road, visitors to this Warren County cemetery have reported hearing a low voice coming from nowhere, which is usually accompanied by an overwhelming sense of dread and the feeling of being chased by something that cannot be seen.
2. Friendship Cemetery, Columbus
Although most commonly known for being the site where Memorial Day originated, there’s another side to Friendship Cemetery. It has been reported that the ghost of a Confederate soldier can be seen at night patrolling the graves of the numerous Civil War soldiers buried in the historic cemetery.
3. Seymour Cemetery a.k.a. Rock ‘n Roll Cemetery, Ocean Springs
Beyond creepy, this small cemetery is located down an isolated dirt road, surrounded by woods. Those entering the graveyard must pass through a gate, which, according to several visitors, forcibly closed on them while trying to exit. It has also been reported that a lady in white is present and, oftentimes, gets way too close for comfort.
4. Natchez City Cemetery, Natchez
Of all the historic graves that fill the Natchez City Cemetery, none are as intriguing as that of 10-year-old Florence Irene Ford. After passing away from yellow fever, Florence’s mother had a walk-in grave built. The custom grave, which included a glass top and bottom, allowed the grieving mother to descend below the ground and view her daughter whenever she pleased. Over the years, several strange things have happened at the grave. According to a former cemetery employee, a visitor once descended the steps to the grave and returned covered in some type of glowing green substance, which was then "scooped" up and released into the sky, where it eventually disappeared.
5. Bethany Historic Cemetery, Baldwyn
This cemetery is the final resting place of dozens of Confederate soldiers, and the site of several strange supernatural occurrences. Sightings of phantom soldiers are not uncommon at the cemetery, and are often accompanied by the aroma of gun powder and the sound of gunshots, cannons, and other explosives associated with battle.
6. Kosciusko City Cemetery, Kosciusko
After Laura Kelly’s death in the late 1800s, her husband was so distraught he commissioned a renowned Italian sculptor to create a life-size statue of his beloved. The grieving husband then had a third story added to his home just so he could see the statue of his wife gazing back at him. Today, visitors to this Kosciusko cemetery have claimed that, at times, the statue of Laura Kelly appears to be weeping, perhaps still heartbroken.
7. Chapel of the Cross, Madison
Among the graves that fill this cemetery is that of Henry Grey Vick, which is known to have a supernatural visitor from time to time. Vick was killed in a duel just days before was set to marry Helen Johnstone. Completely heartbroken, Johnstone attended Vick’s funeral dressed in her wedding gown and watched his casket be lowered into the ground on May 21, 1859 – the day that was supposed to be her wedding day. Johnstone’s heartbroken spirit has been known to visit Vick’s grave - oftentimes sitting in the bench shown in the background of this photo.
8. Franklin Cemetery a.k.a. Garden of Hope Cemetery, Gautier
Considered one of the most haunted in the country, this Gautier cemetery is teeming with paranormal activity. Cheryl Anne, a friendly young ghost, and Bloody Sarah, a menacing spirit, are among those believed haunt the historic graveyard. According to several reports, Bloody Sarah runs into the road, giving drivers the impression they’ve run over her. Witnesses claim that she can be heard insanely laughing throughout the entire ordeal.
Other ghost sightings in this cemetery include Cheryl Anne’s father, Hal, who supposedly killed Cheryl Anne, her siblings and her mother, and the ghost of a man who climbs from his grave, steals flowers and wreaths from other gravesites, and then returns to his grave with the loot.
