Located in Vicksburg, the now abandoned Kuhn State Memorial Hospital first opened its doors in 1832 in order to combat a smallpox outbreak. The hospital treated Civil War soldiers, victims of a severe Yellow Fever epidemic, mental patients, and people with infectious diseases, who were housed in an area of the hospital known as the “Pest House.” Throughout its years in operation, Kuhn State Memorial Hospital saw many pass before their time, which may have something to do with the unexplainable occurrences that have taken place there.

In the years that followed the hospital’s closing in 1989, several paranormal investigators have visited the property, including members of the Mississippi Paranormal Research Institute. The site was even featured on the show “Ghost Asylum.” The investigative team noted several strange happenings, including an EVP recording of a little girl, the K-2 meter, which lights up when spirits are present, went off several times, a pendulum was used to communicate with an entity, and the word “help” suddenly appeared written backwards in a pile of dust on the floor of the embalming room.

All of the eerie happenings that have taken place at Kuhn State are enough to make you do one of two things – either stay far away from this creepy place or check it out for yourself. If you’re more into the latter, there’s bad news and good news. First, the bad news; visiting the hospital is not recommended since the structure is extremely unsteady due to age, not to mention there are open elevator shafts, black mold, asbestos and debris.
