One of the state’s oldest restaurants, Velvet Cream is a culinary staple that serves up an expansive menu of frozen treats and…gourmet burgers?! That’s right; the retro drive-in doles out tasty burgers, too, which, after one bite, will change the way you see this Mississippi culinary staple forever.
Velvet Cream, which is also known as The Dip, is in Hernando. It opened in 1947, making it the oldest, continually running restaurant in DeSoto County.
The self-proclaimed “Burger Bazaar and Ice Cream Emporium” boasts a wall-sized menu that’s overflowing with eats and sweets. It wasn’t always that way, though.
In its early days, Velvet Cream was a tiny 400-square-foot eatery, serving a limited menu of burgers, vanilla ice cream, and bottled root beer and Coke.

Over the years, both the building and the menu have been expanded. Today, patrons can choose from over 250 ice cream flavor combos and more than 20 gourmet burgers.
There are burger options for non-adventurous eaters, too. Truly, the menu is so varied that you’d be hard-pressed not to find something that piques your interests.
From a tiny burger shack to a popular eatery known for its lengthy menu of frozen treats and gourmet burgers, Velvet Cream has undoubtedly solidified its place as a culinary staple.
