Journey To The 1800s With A Visit To This Historic Mississippi Cemetery

Stepping back in time is as easy as paying a visit to the Biloxi City Cemetery. Known by locals as the Old Biloxi Cemetery, the historic burial ground is filled with gravesites that date back decades, even centuries. The cemetery is open daily for self-guided tours. And, as of recently, you can take a virtual tour online. Read on to learn more about one of Mississippi’s most historic graveyards.

Established in 1699, Biloxi has a ton of history – and a great place to learn about that history is the Biloxi City Cemetery.

Fittingly dubbed the Old Biloxi Cemetery, the burial ground is brimming with historic gravesites.

“How historic?” you ask. Several of the headstones date back to the 1800s!

Some of the city’s most famous residents are buried in the Biloxi City Cemetery.

Among those buried in the historic graveyard are Edward Barq, the inventor of Barq’s Root Beer, Walter "Skeet" Hunt, the founder of Mardi Gras on the Gulf Coast, and Jean Guilhot, who was known as The Hermit of Deer Island since he lived alone on the island for years.

Every October for the past 15 years, the city hosts a guided tour of the cemetery. During the tour, costumed storytellers bring to life Biloxi’s rich and diverse history.

October isn’t your only chance to tour the historic cemetery, though.

The grounds are open daily for self-guided tours.

A guide book, which can be picked up from the Biloxi Visitors Center, along with several informative markers ensure you get the most out of the self-guided tour.
