And while it may be frowned up to just show up in the kitchens of random families, you can still get your hands on this type of grub thanks to the variety of family-owned restaurants scattered throughout the Magnolia State. 1. Laws Hill Fish House (3717 Laws Hill Rd., Holly Springs)
In Mississippi, some of the best meals come from fish houses, and that’s exactly the case with Laws Hill. The restaurant has been in business for over 50 years – allowing plenty of time to perfect the secret family recipe used to make Laws Hill’s famous hushpuppies.

2. Bill’s Creole and Steak Depot (471 Railroad Ave., Flora)
For years, Bill’s has been serving up a mouthwatering fare that includes everything from steaks and seafood to Creole-inspired dishes, such as crawfish etouffee, gumbo, and red beans and rice.
3. Bridge Street Grill (124 West Bridge St., Enterprise)
Looking for "good eating served up with southern hospitality?" Then you’ll definitely want to stop by this Enterprise eatery, where you'll find an expansive menu that includes everything from burgers and steaks to southern classics. While there, be sure to try Bridge Street Grill’s hand battered fries - they're a restaurant specialty.
Raved about by locals, a visit to Old Hickory Steak House is a must for any steak lover. The Columbus eatery is known for its melt-in-your-mouth steaks, which are charcoal grilled and served with perfectly cooked baked potatoes and crispy garlic toast.
A family affair since opening in 1977, Mama Hamil’s boasts an impressive buffet filled with southern classics, including Mama Hamil’s famous fried chicken. After one bite, you’ll see why the restaurant has won numerous accolades, including "Best Buffet" and "Best Soul Food."
Home cooking in an atmosphere to match, this Florence gem includes a buffet that’s brimming with authentic southern cuisine. Complete your meal with the homemade bread pudding, it's a customer favorite.
In business for five generations, this family-owned restaurant has become synonymous with great barbecue, winning numerous awards throughout the years. Aside from award-winning barbecue, Ubon’s menu is filled with authentic southern meals and $5 burgers that can’t be beat.
8. Nail’s Grocery and Deli (4635 Highway 82, Stewart)
As is often the case in Mississippi, this gas station eatery serves up some great food. Sure to please, the menu includes everything from great barbecue to home cooked meals and delicious steaks.
Since being established in 1892, this Learned landmark has been owned solely by generations of the Gibbes family. Today, the still-operating general store also serves as a restaurant, which has garnered a reputation for its great steaks. Aside from juicy rib-eyes and filets, the fare includes seafood options, hearty sides, like potato casserole, and lamb chops that are said to be just as delicious as the steaks.
Though many things have changed at Lusco’s since opening in 1933, one thing has remained the same - the special batter used for Lusco’s fried chicken. The lightly battered chicken is golden, tender, juicy, and just a little peppery, making it easy to see why Lusco’s has been named one of Delta Magazine’s "Top 25 Picks."
