Though Mississippi is filled with great restaurants, some of the best are the hole-in-the-wall spots. You know; the kinds of places that don’t look like much on the outside, but just so happen to serve insanely delicious food. Here’s one restaurant that fits that bill and is definitely worth a visit:
Head to 101 Beatty Street in Jackson, and you’ll find one of the state’s most iconic eateries – Beatty Street Grocery. As the name implies, it was originally a grocery store, but that changed when it was purchased by Mack Baldwin in 1940.
In an effort to compete with the larger grocery stores moving into the area, Baldwin added a kitchen to the store and began serving sandwiches and burgers – a tradition that lives on to this day through his granddaughter.
Step inside the legendary restaurant, and place your order at the counter. Beatty Street Grocery tends to get pretty crowded, so if you visit at lunch time, expect a wait.
The menu is displayed over the counter. Though it includes plenty of tasty options, like po’ boys and seafood platters, you’ll want to go with the restaurant’s specialty – the burgers.
If you’re looking for frills, like linens and real silverware, you won’t find them here. Instead, you’ll dine at tables made of old stock shelves. But don’t worry; it’s not the ambiance that Beatty Street Grocery is known for….
For $1.59 extra, you can add fries and a drink to your burger. You’ll have a choice between regular French fries seasoned with Tony’s or sweet potato fries. A word of advice – go with the Tony’s fries (they’re a customer favorite).
Beatty Street Grocery is located at 101 Beatty Street in Jackson. It’s open Monday through Friday, from 6 am – 5:30 pm, and Saturday, from 6:30 am – 2 pm. Remember, Beatty Street Grocery accepts CASH ONLY, so be sure to hit up the ATM before your visit. For more information, click here.
