Mississippi is a great place to live, so it’s no surprise that people would want to move here. And while we Mississippians will be welcoming and friendly to newcomers, that doesn’t that we won’t take note of their strange traits. From accents and vocabulary to certain food choices, here are 12 surefire ways to spot someone who just moved to Mississippi.

1. They’ll talk funny.

You may not be able to tell by looking at them, but once a newcomer opens their mouth, it’s pretty obvious they’re not from Mississippi.
2. They expect this when they ask for tea.

Here in Mississippi, we all know "tea" to be cold, sweet, and delicious. So if someone asks for tea and is surprised when it’s not served hot, you’re probably in the presence of a new resident.
3. They refer to these as "shopping carts."

Anyone who doesn’t call this a "buggy," most likely didn’t grow up in the Magnolia State.
4. They think these are supposed to worn only at home.

10. They think "dinner" and "supper" is the same thing.

In some places, these two words are interchangeable, but not in Mississippi. Here in the Magnolia State, dinner is the midday meal and supper is the evening meal.
11. They’ll likely mistake mosquitoes for small birds.

As one of the most affordable states in the country, most new residents are blown away by the astronomical cost of car tags in Mississippi. And who could blame them? Paying hundreds of dollars for a sticker is a bit hard to swallow.
