We Mississippians tend to be a pretty easygoing bunch. Heck, we’re known for our hospitality. However, there are a few things that out-of-towners can say or do to rub us the wrong way. So if you’re new to Mississippi, take note. Here are 12 scenarios that are practically guaranteed to make a Mississippian cringe.

1. Assume everyone in Mississippi lives on a farm.

Believe it or not, Mississippi isn’t all rural. There are actually cities here.
2. Say there is nothing to see or do in Mississippi.

Think there’s nothing to do in Mississippi? Think again! Mississippi is filled with state parks, historic sites, antebellum mansions, museums, wildlife preserves, unique attractions, and more.
3. Ask if people in Mississippi have electricity.

This is one of the most absurd questions you can ask a Mississippian. This is the south; not the past. Of course we have electricity, and believe it or not, we have running water too.
4. Serve store bought tea…

5. …or canned biscuits.

Sure, if you’re in a pinch, serve them. But don’t think you’re fooling anybody.
6. Act like every part of Mississippi is the same.

8. Comment negatively about our food.

9. Ask about cow tipping.

10. Tell us that we talk funny.

11. Claim you’re not a fan of barbecue.

Say what?!?! Mississippi is filled with great barbecue joints, so not trying any would be a huge mistake.
12. Say all mayonnaise tastes the same.

If you’re going to live in Mississippi, you need to know that all mayo is not created equal. The brand you choose is serious business here in the Magnolia State. Whether you prefer Hellmann’s, Blue Plate, or Duke's, chances are you’ve been eating the same brand for years.
