There are a ton of great sites and attractions in the Magnolia State. Some, like the Natchez Trace Parkway and Vicksburg National Military Park, are widely known and easy to find. Then there are others that are a bit more obscure. Definitely worth the search, these lesser-known locales are some of the best in the state. So, the next time you’re looking for the perfect destination for an in-state adventure, check out one of these 11 hidden places in Mississippi that only locals know about.

1. Chautauqua Park (26031 Highway 51, Crystal Springs)
Chautauqua Park covers 74 acres and offers nature trails, springs, creeks, a beautiful lake, and the state’s only treetop trail. The 1500’ boardwalk is placed high in the trees, affording nature-lovers one-of-a-kind views of wildlife and the gorgeous surroundings. 2. Onward Store (6693 Highway 61, Rolling Fork)
Please note, Onward Store is no longer in business.
This still-functioning general store has been serving locals and hunters since 1913, and in recent years has grown to include a restaurant that serves a variety of southern favorites, from homemade pig skins to fried chicken. And while the food is delicious, it’s not the only reason to visit the Onward Store. Truly a unique experience, the store is filled with old photos and artifacts, relating to the history of the area. There’s also a variety of merchandise, which includes plenty of bear-themed items since the store is built at the site of Theodore Roosevelt’s famous bear hunt. (You know; the one that resulted in the creation of the Teddy Bear).

3. Tara Wildlife (6791 Eagle Lake Shore Road, Vicksburg)
This secluded resort has been rated one of the nation’s top destinations for deer and turkey hunting, but that’s not all it has to offer. Encompassing thousands of acres, guests at Tara Wildlife can take part in everything from serene strolls to exciting wildlife tours, making it the perfect escape.

4. The Tomato Place (3229 U.S Highway 61, Vicksburg)
Venture down Highway 61 in Vicksburg and you’ll eventually run into this one-of-a-kind roadside stand. The former fruit stand now serves some of the best home cooked food, real fruit smoothies, fresh squeezed lemon juice, and other made-from-scratch goodies. While waiting for your food, spend some time looking around the shop area of the eatery, where you’ll find plenty of handcrafted gifts, art, and other unique merchandise.

5. Shady Acres Village (624 Highway 49, Seminary)
At this "oasis of hospitality," you’ll find a mouthwatering restaurant, charming general store, bakery, gift shop, and gardening center. Grab a bite in the restaurant and then spend some time browsing the shelves at the general store and gift shop, where you can stock up on jams, jellies, homemade sweets, Mississippi pottery, and more.

Despite its remote location, Darwell’s has been attracting locals for years now. Aside from the southern-inspired menu, which includes everything from BBQ to po’boys, the eatery boasts a lively atmosphere, complete with outdoor dining and live entertainment.

7. Williams Brothers General Store (10360 Road 375, Philadelphia)
Known as "Williamsville" by locals, this charming, family-owned general store has been in business since 1907 and definitely lives up to its slogan, "here at Williams Brothers the good old days are still here." Peruse the merchandise and you’ll find everything from groceries to boots. And if you want a true Williamsville experience, be sure to try the bacon, which is sliced right in front of you, and the hoop cheese.

8. H. D. Gibbes & Sons (140 Main Street, Learned)
Fill up on history and great food at this iconic general store in Learned. First opened in 1892, Gibbes still operates as a store but now also acts as a restaurant, which has a reputation for serving some of the best steaks in the state. Be sure to allow yourself plenty of time to explore the quaint store, which is filled with everyday items as well as some that are sure to give you a feeling of nostalgia.

9. Fulmer’s Farmstead (510 Wingate Road, Richton)
Stepping back in time is as simple as visiting this Richton gem, where you’ll find an authentic farm and fully-operational general store. Even better, the store includes a café and bakery, which offers home cooked meals and fresh-baked goodies on a daily basis. The charming farm also hosts a slew of events throughout the year, including the much-anticipated Pecan Festival.

10. Chalk Mine Hollow (Iuka)

Located near Pickwick Lake, this abandoned chalk mine is about the size of a Wal-Mart and includes three long tunnels, which are connected by numerous passageways. Although the site is not attended, locals have hiked to the mine and explored its interior for years now.

11. St. Mary’s Chapel (1054 Lower Woodville Road, Natchez)
Dating back to 1839, this Gothic-revival chapel was once part of the Laurel Hill plantation. Although services haven’t been held inside the chapel for many years, its enchanting atmosphere has caught the attention of many brides, making it a popular wedding venue.
