It’s a common scenario. You’re driving around, get hungry, and pull into the nearest fast food restaurant or convenience store. But what if I told you those aren’t your only options? It’s true; Mississippi is practically overflowing with great eateries. However, it’s hard to know if a roadside restaurant is worth stopping for based solely on looks. Lucky for you, that’s where this list comes in. The next time you’re driving around the Magnolia State, keep your eyes peeled for one of these 10 roadside restaurants, which you won’t regret stopping for.
1. The Tomato Place (3229 Highway 61 South, Vicksburg)
Venture down Highway 61 in Vicksburg and you’ll eventually run into this one-of-a-kind roadside eatery. The former fruit stand now serves some of the best home cooked food, real fruit smoothies, and other made-from-scratch goodies. While waiting for your food, spend some time looking around the shop area, where you’ll find plenty of handcrafted gifts, art, and other unique merchandise.

2. Country 35 Diner (1504 Highway 35 South, Foxworth)
If you’re looking to get your fill of traditional southern cooking, then this is the place for you. Visit during breakfast and you’ll find a menu loaded with true classics, including tomato gravy, biscuits, and grits. Head to the diner later in the day and you’ll be met with a buffet overflowing with home-cooked classics, which includes the restaurant’s specialty, Mrs. Candy’s fried chicken.
You may not think of an old country store when craving a good meal, but that’s just because you haven’t been to this Learned gem. Gibbes first opened in 1892, serving as the local general store. Eventually, tables were added to the store, creating a makeshift restaurant. Before long, the store gained a reputation for its amazing food, including out-of-this-world steaks and mouthwatering lamb chops.
Sure, it’d be easy to drive right past this unassuming eatery…but that’d be a real mistake because Taylor Grocery has been serving the "south’s best catfish" since the late-1970s. Enjoy whole catfish or filets either fried, grilled, or blackened. In addition to the famous fish, the menu is brimming with delicious options, including steak, sandwiches, salads, and more.
Definitely the most eye-catching roadside restaurant in Mississippi, Mammy’s Cupboard is a must visit. Aside from its unique appearance, the eatery is known for its southern-style meals and decadent homemade pies. Throughout the years, the mouthwatering fare has attracted locals, tourists, and even a few celebrities.
The fact that residents of the food-centric city of Oxford head to Betty Davis Grocery when craving barbecue speaks volumes. A bit off the beaten path, the roadside barbecue joint features a menu brimming with smoky goodness, but the mouthwatering ribs are definitely a customer favorite.
At first glance you may not even realize the small white wood frame house on Rosedale’s Main Street is a restaurant, but it just so happens to be a legendary hot tamale shop. Stop in and try the mouthwatering tamales, which are beef-filled and wrapped in corn shucks.
8. Old Hickory Steak House (1301 Highway 45 N., Columbus)
Raved about by locals, a visit to Old Hickory Steak House is a must for any steak lover. The Columbus eatery is known for its melt-in-your-mouth steaks, which are charcoal grilled and served with perfectly cooked baked potatoes and crispy garlic toast.
Proving that good things do come in small packages, this tiny Magee eatery has gained a reputation for serving some of the best hamburgers in the entire state. In fact, people drive from miles around just for a taste of the mouthwatering burgers, which according to customers, are "big, juicy, and fantastic."
This Canton restaurant may be modest in appearance but the fare is sure to satisfy. Browse the menu, and you’ll find a variety of fast-food eats, including barbecue, burgers, and fried fish.
