Minnesota is known for lots of different foods. Jucy Lucys are our signature burger. Hotdishes and cookie bars are our favorite potluck fare. And deep-fried anything is the go-to treat during state fair season. But did you know Minnesota is also home to the world’s best donuts? There’s a donut shop in Grand Marais that has been delighting people with its creations for generations.
World's Best Donuts has been a must-stop spot in Grand Marais for nearly 50 years. It all began in 1969 with a little building called the Grand Marais Donut Shop.
Since the opening all those years ago, the cute red building that now stands as World's Best Donuts is a North Shore icon. If someone has been to Grand Marais, you can bet they've been to World's Best Donuts.
There have been changes over the years, including a renovation that added indoor seating. But this spot is still a family-owned establishment. Five generations have helped turn this spot into the world's best donut destination.
Visitors can grab their donut to go, but the best option may be to enjoy it in the coffee room. Here, you can enjoy the buzzing atmosphere as you eat your treat.
There are more unique options as well. The cream cheese swirls are amazing, and the filled croissants are flaky and delicious. Why not order one of each?
While all the donuts are great, the specialty at World's Best Donuts is definitely the skizzle. Described as a "sweet, yeast dough stretched out and deep fried," it's a decadent treat that can't be beat.
