Trent Jonas came to Minnesota to attend college - and never left. He's a Twin Cities-based writer with a BA in English and a MFA in creative writing, a Minnesota Master Naturalist, and the proud father of two adult children. With more than a decade of freelance writing experience under his belt, Trent is often out exploring his favorite topics: Minnesota's woods, lakes, and trails. Rhubarb pie is his weakness, so discovering new diners is also a passion.
If you’re looking to check all the winter fun boxes in a single trip, make your way to the Minnesota winter playground of Biwabik. There, you’ll find all the wintertime adventure you can handle.
Located on the Iron Range, the small town of Biwabik - the name of which is derived from the Ojibwe language - was designed with a nod to the Bavarian Alps.
And like its German inspiration, Biwabik offers its visitors plenty of opportunity for winter fun. Visit in early December for Weihnachtsfest, the town’s annual holiday festival.
Nearby Giants Ridge is the area’s winter sports headquarters, offering downhill skiing and snowboarding on 36 runs.
The world-class Nordic center at Giants Ridge was designed for the U.S. ski team and boasts more than 60 kilometers of trails that wind through the pristine Superior National Forest.
Make your trip a true Northwoods adventure with a dogsledding excursion at Wintergreen Dogsled Lodge, in nearby Ely. Wintergreen even partners with Giants Ridge for lodging.
