In the heat of summer, we Minnesotans know that the best place to cool off – and soak in some rays – is near water. Lucky for us, there are many waterfront towns that offer ample opportunity for lakeside – or riverside – relaxation. Here are 11 of our favorites:
1. Redwood Falls
Redwood Falls was built right where the Mississippi River and the Redwood River meet. Because of this, there are many scenic areas in and around town. Redwood Falls is also home to Alexander Ramsey Park, where you can see an impressive waterfall. It's a lovely spot for a riverside picnic on a warm day.
2. Stillwater
On the western banks of the St. Croix River, the town of Stillwater is just about perfect. Several restaurants offer outdoor dining and there are several trails in the area. Plus, the river itself offers endless fun for those who don't mind paddling.
3. Lindstrom
As
America's Little Sweden , Lindstrom is a charming town worth visiting just for its interesting Swedish heritage. But being in the Chisago Lakes area, the town has plenty of water access. Whether you like boating, swimming, or fishing, you'll find something to in this waterfront town.
4. Wabasha
As one of the oldest towns in Minnesota, Wabasha is an interesting place to visit for its history alone. The town's location on the western banks of the Mississippi River is even more reason to visit. With a paved path along the river that provides excellent views, a trip to Wabasha would make a great summer day trip.
5. Red Wing
Here is another river town that is full of beauty. With the Mississippi River running through it, many choose to enjoy town from along its banks. But if you want to experience its full beauty, see it from above. The view from Barn Bluff offers incredible views of Red Wing, the river, and Wisconsin beyond.
6. Sandstone
Sandstone is in east-central Minnesota along the banks of the Kettle River. A popular river for rafting, the Kettle has some rough rapids along its upper portions. But it quickly calms as it flows into Big Spring Falls. The best way to see the river is by visiting Sandstone's Banning State Park. Along with the river and its waterfall, the park is loaded with trails, forest, and history.
7. Walker
Walker is located on the banks of Leech Lake, so there is plenty of outdoor recreation to be found here. Perhaps the most popular is fishing. This large lake is home to many fish species, with muskie, walleye, pike, and bass particularly abundant.
8. Fergus Falls
Fergus Falls is the county seat of
Otter Tail County , which has more lakes than any other county in Minnesota. The town is home to several smaller lakes, and there are many others nearby. Fishing is a popular activity, and many enjoy hiking on the several trails in the area as well.
9. Northfield
Northfield is about as close to being waterfront as you can get. The Cannon River runs straight through town, offering lovely water views. One of the best ways to take in the view is by dining at any of the outdoor patios in the area.
10. Chatfield
Chatfield is a small town, but it sure is pretty. The downtown area is lovely, with many local businesses housed in historic buildings. The north branch of the popular Root River flows through town, making it a great spot for outdoor recreation.
11. Princeton
Princeton is a quaint town on the Rum River. Because of the river's slow speed, it happens to be a great place for a lazy float on a summer day. There are tube rental companies in nearby towns, or you can bring your own. No matter how you do it, Princeton is a fantastic summer day trip location.
Which of these towns is your favorite? Do you know of any other great waterfront towns? Feel free to share!
