In the Land of 10,000 Lakes, it’s easy to overlook a lake or two. It is just not possible to visit every single one, so most of us stick to the most well-known, tried-and-true lakes. But just because a lake isn’t as popular doesn’t mean it’s not worth visiting. In fact, there’s at least one underrated lake that is the perfect spot to relax this summer. Take a look:
Monson Lake is a small lake in Becker County, Minnesota, about 70 miles southwest of St. Cloud.
Monson Lake State Park is one of the least-visited state parks in Minnesota, with just 21,000 annual visits. At just 346 acres, it is also among the smallest state parks in our state.
But this little lake has a lot to offer. Visitors are welcome to cast a line from the fishing pier or launch their boat using the boat landing. You can expect to pull walleye, bass, northerns, and sunfish from this lake.
If fishing's not your thing, there are hiking trails around the lake. With just 1.2 miles of paths, the park trail system should be manageable for most people.
History buffs will want to make a stop at the historic marker near the lake. It honors a family who lost their lives there during the Dakota War of 1862.
The lake and surrounding area are also home to a variety of wildlife. A prime birdwatching spot, keep your eyes peeled for herons, pelicans, egrets, and more.
All in all, this quiet lake is ideal for a day of relaxation. And if you want to take it to the next level, you can even stay the night at one of the state park's lakeside campsites.
