If you’re a lifelong Minnesotan you hopefully know what to avoid. From traffic patterns to hiking risks, it’s a good idea to share the wisdom with the younger generation and any MN newcomers. Here are some good words of advice about what you definitely want to avoid when you’re living in or visiting the land of 10,000 lakes.

1. Getting lost in the woods - especially alone! MN is a relatively flat state and without any visible landmarks it's all too easy to get lost.

So stay on the trails and always keep a map and compass handy!
2. Rush hour in the Twin Cities, or traffic for any sporting event.

Try parking early in the day for a lower full-day price and then spend a day hanging out in the gorgeous cities!
3. Freeways under construction - which just leads to more traffic and a lot of frustration.

4. Going anywhere without an umbrella. Because you never know when the rain or snow might hit!!

5. Icy roads - leads to falling and car crashes and nothing good. For a fun time try a frozen lake instead!

6. Forgetting fire safety. It's important to consider anything that could start a fire and do whatever you can to prevent it!

Nobody wants to deal with the ramifications of starting a fire!
7. Wildlife! Leave our wonderful wildlife alone and try to avoid getting too close on the roads and the trails when they might want be in a position to hurt you (think bears and moose).

8. Heading out in to the woods without proper supplies.

Especially on extended trips like in the BWCA! Prepare for any weather that might surprise you!
9. MOA - especially during peak shopping times!

10. People who aren't concerned with boat safety. With a state full of lakes - it's not worth the risk of not taking boat safety seriously.
