If you spend enough time in a city or town, it’s easy to forget that there’s a whole world of nature waiting just outside city limits. But if you venture out, you’ll discover hundreds of forests, lakes, and fields that are filled with natural beauty. These spots are all over the Land of 10,000 Lakes, and we have more than 60 state parks to prove it. Beyond those parks, there are still more natural areas to discover. For example, did you know that Minnesota is home to several national wildlife refuges? Today we want to talk about one of the most beautiful spots in northwestern Minnesota. Next time you’re looking for a nature-filled hike, take a trip to Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge near Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Here’s what you need to know:
Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge is a 42,000-acre expanse near the northern Minnesota town of Detroit Lakes. The refuge was established in the 1930s and remains a diverse nature area with many species of animals and plants.
Being a wildlife refuge, there are many species of animals that make their homes in Tamarac. For example, small mammals such as foxes, porcupines, and otters prowl the forests and lakes for food. Keep quiet on your hike, and you may get lucky enough to see one.
Large mammals also make homes here. White-tailed deer are a common sight throughout the refuge. Wolves also thrive in the refuge, though they are a rarer sight.
Tamarac is also an important area for many kinds of birds. Common backyard birds are easy to spot. The waters also host migratory species such as sandhill cranes and Canada geese. Look up, and you might even spot a hawk or an eagle nesting in a tree.
Signs of tiny critters such as spiders can also be spotted. Just about anywhere you look, you'll find evidence of animal life as you explore the refuge.
If you're a nature lover who enjoys spotting animals, you'll love your trip to Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge. This vast nature area is beautiful in every season of the year!
