In every state in the nation, there are at least one or two towns that hit it out of the park when it comes to small-town charm. Minnesota has even more than just one or two. Every corner of our state is dotted with small towns that would easily rank among the top in the entire country. One of our favorites is a tiny little town called Preston. This little spot is in southern Minnesota, and it might just be the most charming small town in the country. Here’s what you should know:
Preston is a small town in Minnesota, about 120 miles southeast of the Twin Cities. The town is home to around 1,300 people.
Another beautiful feature of Preston and its surroundings is the Root River. In fact, much of the town's tourism surrounds the river. Preston is the Trout Capital of Minnesota!
Beyond the beauty of Preston, interesting historic buildings are scattered across town, which was platted in 1855. For example, an old grain elevator still stands in Preston. It once loaded grains into trains that traveled all across the country!
Of course, Preston is filled with modern conveniences as well. The downtown area has plenty to explore. Charming storefronts give way to interesting shops and restaurants.
For example, antique lovers will enjoy the unique finds at Urban Artifacts of Preston. Other great shops include the Driftless Fly Fishing Company, the JuliaClaire clothing store, and more.
There are also plenty of restaurants to fill you up when you get hungry. In downtown Preston, the Sweet Stop and Sandwich Shoppe is a popular lunchtime spot.
But that's not all there is to do in Preston. Special events such as Rhythm on the River bring out small but enthusiastic crowds. They're well worth joining in on if you're ever in the area while an event is going on.
The little town of Preston is well worth visiting! There’s so much natural beauty, history, and charm, that you’ll be as enamored with the town as we are. For more information, check out the Preston Chamber and Tourism Facebook page.
