South of the Border Cafe is a humble little restaurant in Grand Marais, Minnesota. It gets its name not from its cuisine, but because it is about 50 miles south of the Canadian border.
This place is popular with travelers and locals alike. It attracts people for breakfast and lunch thanks to its classic diner menu and welcoming staff.
Though everything is good, many diners come to South of the Border exclusively for their breakfasts. Classic hash browns, pancakes, bacon, and eggs are among the most commonly ordered items.
One of the more unique items is the fresh fried fish that you can order alongside eggs and toast. But no matter what you get, you’ll be delighted by the down-to-earth atmosphere and great food of this little-known cafe!
South of the Border Cafe is open 5 a.m. to 2 p.m. every day. For more information, take a look at their Facebook page. And if you’d like to check out another northern Minnesota restaurant we love, check out our article about the gorgeous Naniboujou Lodge.
