These days, many movie theaters are loaded up with premium amenities like reclining seats, glasses of wine, and even gourmet meals. These experiences are fun, and they often make long movies much more comfortable. But there’s something to be said about the classic moviegoing experience that started way back at the turn of the 20th century. Luckily, there are still a few places that cater to cinema fans who want a nostalgic experience. One of the best is in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Riverview Theater, established in the late 1940s, is a decades-old tradition for many Minnesotans. Read on to learn more about this nostalgic spot:
The Riverview Theater is a landmark movie theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota. From the outside, its distinctive marquee and old-school lights hint at what is hiding inside.
The historic theater first opened way back in 1948. Though there is only one screen, the Riverview has showcased countless movies over the decades. Imagine all of the people who have set foot in this place!
When you step inside the Riverview, you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back into the middle of the last century. A lounge area has 1950s-style furniture and décor. Even the carpet and paint look like something from another era!
The concession stand has the same vintage vibe. But its mid-century belies a modern snack stand with everything you’d expect at a movie theater. Grab a bucket of popcorn, a drink, and a sweet treat, and you’ll be set for your movie!
The theater itself is just what you’d expect from an old-school spot, with a few upgrades. The updated seats feature rocker backs and cupholders. The theater holds about 700 people, and the single screen shows 3 or 4 movies every day.
Special events add even more fun to the moviegoing experience. Special screenings highlight works by local filmmakers, show off Oscar-nominated films, and more. There are even all-day movie marathons.
Anyone who visits this classic theater will be charmed by its reasonable prices, excellent film selection, and period features. Stop in for a nostalgic movie experience you won’t soon forget!
The Riverview Theater shows movies seven days a week. You can learn more about their current showtimes and more at their website and Facebook page. And if you can’t get enough of Minnesota’s old movie theaters, take a look at our article about the charming 1920s-era Heights Theater.
