Next time you’re in northern Minnesota, take a detour to Schoolcraft State Park. There, a riverfront trail will guide you through an untouched northern forest.

At 225 acres, Schoolcraft is the perfect state park if you're looking for a spot you can fully explore in one day. The park's main trail, the Schoolcraft Loop Trail, is just 1.7 miles long.

You'll also love the forest as the seasons change. In late September into October, it's awash with the yellows, reds, and oranges of the fall season.

As you continue on the loop, you'll soon find yourself face to face with a still, sparkling body of water. This is the slow-moving Mississippi River as it makes its way south.

Unlike in southern Minnesota, you won't find bridges, buildings, or car traffic anywhere near this stretch of river.

The most you'll see is a flock of migrating birds or a few tourist canoes. Just like the rest of the Schoolcraft Loop Trail, the river is quiet, peaceful, and absolutely perfect.
