Minnesota is a state with a lot of spooky spots. Like anywhere else, we have cemeteries and battlegrounds, creepy bridges and haunted houses. But it turns out you don’t have to go too far off the beaten path to have a creepy encounter in Minnesota. There are many haunted hideaways in our state – so many that you probably have one closer to home than you may think. Here are the 10 best places to spot a ghost in Minnesota.
1. First Avenue, Minneapolis
Some say that the ghost of a woman who hung herself on the premises now haunts this popular downtown music venue. Whatever you do, don't go into the women's bathroom. One guest saw the ghost hanging in the fifth stall.
2. Hamline University, St. Paul
Hamline University has its share of ghost stories too. At Old Main, an employee once saw a man floating through the hall with a noose around his neck. There are also stories of a severed hand crawling around Drew Hall looking for its arm.
3. Washington Avenue Bridge, Minneapolis
This double-decker bridge joining the East and West Banks of the University of Minnesota campus has suffered more than its share of suicides over the years. As a result, some say the bridge is haunted. Those who walk across the pedestrian section have reported hearing footsteps behind them - but seeing nothing when they turned around.
4. Quarry Hill Park, Rochester
There are a few creepy things going on at Quarry Hill. A man is said to have hung himself from a bridge there in the 1960s. A series of caves - now barred - criss-cross the park underground. You can still visit the cemetery of an old hospital on Quarry Hill Park grounds. All of this adds up to one of the most haunted parks in the area - or so they say.
5. Lilydale Regional Park, St. Paul
Lilydale is a beautiful park along the Mississippi River in St. Paul. But some have reported seeing ghostly white figures and hearing screams of distress. My advice? Stick to visiting during the day.
6. St. Cloud State University, St. Cloud
St. Cloud State University students know of several hauntings on their campus. If you've spent some time in Riverview, one of the oldest buildings on campus, you may have seen a ghost child bouncing a ball down the empty halls. Another ghostly rumor? A lunch lady once hung herself in the meat locker of Shoemaker Hall, and she can sometimes be seen floating above beds of the dorm's sleeping students.
7. Ramsey County Courthouse, St. Paul
Some people believe the Ramsey County Courthouse is haunted by a man who was executed before the building was ever finished. His name was William Williams, and he was the last person executed in Minnesota back in 1906. Witnesses have seen his body hanging from a noose inside the courthouse.
8. The Palmer House Hotel, Sauk Centre
Lots of creepy things have happened in the Palmer House Hotel. Ghostly children have been heard running through the halls, glassware has been ripped from shelves, and objects have gone missing. But maybe the creepiest of all? A guest felt a presence laying on top of her when she went to bed.
9. Grant House, Rush City
This popular Rush City restaurant and hotel is over 100 years old, and it's recently gotten plenty of attention from ghost enthusiasts. There are reports of kitchen utensils flying through the air and ghostly orbs floating through the different rooms. It's possible that a ghost named Peter is responsible.
10. Pipestone County Museum, Pipestone
A little girl wearing a blue dress has been seen by several visitors to this former city hall. There are also reports of the departed doctor continuing to work in his office upstairs. How else would you explain the creaking chair and shuffling papers?
Have you ever had a paranormal encounter in any of these places? Have you ever seen a ghost anywhere else in Minnesota? Where?
