Minnesota is full of quaint small towns that offer big fun. Whether it’s canoeing or fishing or a trek through the woods, most places in this state boast at least one lake or forest to explore. But there’s one town in particular that has been called out as one of the best. It has a population of just 3,400 people, but thousands more tourists visit each year to enjoy the wilderness that surrounds it. That small town is Ely, which National Geographic has recently recognized as one of the best towns in the world for outdoor adventure. Let’s take a look at why.
Ely's small size makes it a charming stop on your way to outdoor adventure. There's enough to see and do within the town that you could easily spend your whole trip there.
Ely is also a great place to spot wildlife without ever stepping foot into the woods. The International Wolf Center and North American Bear Center allow visitors to see these wild creatures up close with no long hikes or tent setups needed.
There's plenty of wildlife to see there, too. Visit a nearby lake in the summer to hear loons call, or take a trek through the woods to catch a glimpse of a larger animal.
Of course, there are lakes too. Over 1,100 of Minnesota's 10,000 lakes lie within the Boundary Waters Wilderness Area. Being on the western edge of the area, Ely provides access to more than a few of them.
To enjoy the lakes, visitors can bring their own canoes and kayaks, or rent some from one of the several outfitters within Ely. You'll also find camping gear, fishing supplies, and anything else you can possibly need for your wilderness trip.
Many opt to hike to a Boundary Waters campsite, but there are many less rustic lodging options within Ely as well. When you're tired from your outdoor adventuring, you'll definitely find a place to sleep that suits you.
Visitors to Ely are within shouting distance of magnificent lakes, fascinating wildlife, and endless recreation. But the real draw is the solitude. When the day winds down, Ely offers nothing but peace and quiet.
Ely is a beautiful town in Minnesota, and it provides amazing access to outdoor activities. Have you been there? What’s your favorite thing about Ely? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
