Nestled on the eastern banks of the St. Croix River, the small town of Marine on St. Croix is one of the oldest in Minnesota. Much of the town is listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places. One of its most historic buildings is the Marine General Store, which was built in 1870. It is the oldest general store in Minnesota, and visitors can still buy groceries and meals there just like they did in the 19th century.
As we mentioned, Marine General Store was built in 1870. It was originally used as a company store for a lumber business.
But some things have changed more drastically. Owners have added modern fixtures so they can more easily assist shoppers. There are even solar panels on the roof!
Though modern improvements have been made, the store is still known for having its original wood floors. Not bad looking for almost 150 years old, right?
Marine General Store's popular bakery plays a big part in attracting visitors. Each day, shoppers can purchase delicious fresh baked goods. You can even special order an amazing birthday cake.
Once called the Village Scoop, this ice cream shop is historic in its own right. It opened in 1977 and moved to its current location in 1994. The former General Store owners gave the ice cream shop its new name when they bought it in 2012.
Marine General Store went up for sale again in 2015, but there's no sign of anyone closing up shop. After over 100 years in business, another century looks promising.
Marine General Store is located at 101 Judd Street in Marine on St. Croix. Have you ever been there? Or, if you’re looking for more old store in Minnesota, check out Minnesota’s oldest ice cream shop.
