Being the 32nd state to join the United States, Minnesota may seem like it doesn’t have a whole lot of history. After all, many of the states had been officially part of the U.S. for decades before Minnesota’s statehood was official. But the Land of 10,000 Lakes does have a few claims to historical fame. One of the most interesting? It is home to the oldest basilica in America. You can still visit it today.
The Basilica of Saint Mary is the oldest basilica in the United States, and it's right in Minneapolis.
The basilica first began at another location in 1871, but the current structure was built starting in 1907. It officially opened in 1914, though the interior was not finished until 1925.
The Basilica of Saint Mary holds many events, too. It has been the site of the Basilica Block Party since 1995. Concerts and other events also occur throughout the year.
If you get the chance to visit this historic Minnesota landmark, don't miss out. The grandiosity of building inside and out is truly breathtaking. Visit at 88 17th Street North in Minneapolis.
