Here in Minnesota, certain areas of the state get all the attention. The northeast is home to the North Shore, where many of the state’s most popular parks draw visitors from all around. And the south is not only home to the busy Twin Cities, but to many excellent parks as well. But other regions have plenty to offer as well, including Minnesota’s northwestern corner. Here, among other things, you’ll find the little-known Old Mill State Park. With its sandy beach, historic buildings, and unique views, it is a Minnesota hidden treasure. Take a look:
Old Mill State Park is a small park in Marshall County, Minnesota, in the northwestern region of the state. It’s about 30 miles northwest of Thief River Falls.
The park covers 406 acres. It was originally a family homestead, dating back to the 1880s. There are many historic buildings still standing in the park today, including a pioneer cabin.
There’s also the old mill that gives the park its name. There have been several mills in this park, the one standing now rebuilt in the mid-20th century. It’s still put to work as a special event each year.
Beyond the historic landmarks, there are many things to see at the park. Trails offer views of the lovely tree-lined Middle River. Many birds, deer, and other animals have been spotted along the trails.
If you have some time to spare, you could consider spending the night. The campground is quiet and clean, and sites come with a picnic table and fire ring.
Old Mill State Park is a hidden gem in northwestern Minnesota and a great place to have some summer fun! Have you ever been there? Let us know what you think of it in the comments! And if you know of any other little-known attractions in Minnesota, let us know by nominating it.
