Minneapolis may once have been the flour-milling capital of the world. But that’s not the only place in the Land of 10,000 Lakes with a strong history of milling. Flour and lumber mills once played a big role in the economies of small towns across the state. Few remain today, but that doesn’t mean every trace of them is gone, too. There’s a restaurant in Austin, Minnesota, housed in an old mill. In fact, it’s called Old Mill Restaurant, and it’s a fantastic place to visit for those who want great food and interesting history all in one place. Here’s everything you need to know about this tasty spot:
Old Mill Restaurant is a longstanding spot in Austin, Minnesota. It first became a restaurant in 1949, though the building itself dates back to 1850!
Like you'd expect from a mill, the restaurant is right on the banks of a river. In warmer months, the outdoor patio is the perfect place to take in the scenery.
The cozy dining area has a rustic vibe, and the wooded surroundings will make it feel like a real getaway. Couple that with the friendly staff, and a visit to this restaurant is a no-brainer.
But what about the food? In short, it's fantastic! A wide variety of appetizers, from a fruit plate to onion rings to crab cakes, will help you start your meal right.
And when it comes to the main menu, you can't go wrong. Plenty of favorites, like shrimp or burgers, make this a great place for people of all taste buds.
Lighter fare includes delicious chicken salads, wraps, and flavorful sandwiches. Everything is made fresh, and you really can't go wrong with anything you order.
If you visit with a heartier appetite, go for a rack of ribs, prime rib, or filet mignon. Each is served with soup, salad, or fries. No matter what, you'll walk away with a full belly!
Old Mill Restaurant is open Tuesday to Thursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. The restaurant is closed on Sunday and Monday. For more information, including menus, history, and more, check out their website and Facebook page.
