Over its 88-mile route from Detroit Lakes to Park Rapids and Itasca State Park to Walker, the Lake Country Scenic Byway in Minnesota guides travelers through some of the state’s most iconic scenery. You’ll see lakes and forests, experience culture and history, and make memories that will last a lifetime – and that’s with less than three hours of actual driving!
Our route for you generally tracks with the byway, but we do go slightly off the beaten to make sure you see all of the good stuff. Use Google Maps to follow our itinerary on your smartphone.

Detroit Lakes is the western terminus of the byway, and this bustling lake country community is where we'll begin our route. Get a jump start by spending the night before at the beachfront Best Western Premier The Lodge on Lake Detroit.

The byway tracks part of the Pine to Prairie Birding Trail. So, if you're a birder or wildlife enthusiast (or just a regular nature lover), you'll definitely want to stop off at Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge.
