Did you know that Minnesota has a mountain range? It doesn’t hold the soaring peaks of the Rockies – or even the Appalachians – but it’s one of the most beautiful places in Minnesota. Those who visit Minnesota’s Sawtooth Mountains are dazzled by the heights that these low peaks can bring you to. There are many places to discover the Sawtooth Mountains, but one favorite of many is atop Mount Josephine. This peak near Grand Portage isn’t the highest in Minnesota. But it does offer some of the most awe-inspiring views! Read on to learn about the trail that will take you to the top – and about the sight you’ll see when you get there.

Mount Josephine is a low peak along North Shore in Grand Portage, Minnesota. It's about 1,300 feet above sea level, rising around 600 feet above the surrounding area.

The summit is accessible via a short trail through the thick woods that cover the mountain. In warmer months, it's possible to spot birds, insects, rodents, and many other animals along the trail.

The out-and-back trail is about 2.5 miles long. Though it is short, it is steep! It rises about 600 feet in those two miles, so be sure to come prepared for a mildly strenuous hike.
