Here in Minnesota, we’ve got beautiful scenery just about everywhere you look. From our largest cities to our tiniest towns, there’s a pretty landscape or charming main street to take in. One of Minnesota’s prettiest activities, however, isn’t so much a single destination as it is a trip. A drive down our most picturesque road will make you fall in love with Minnesota all over again, and you’ll want to plan a trip ASAP.
Of all the highways and byways in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, Minnesota's most scenic route is the North Shore Scenic Drive.
You can even venture off the beaten path for a gorgeous detour. One of the best is a trip down the 56-mile Gunflint Trail. With access to beautiful trails and lakes, it's well worth the detour. As an added bonus, there's a great restaurant at the end of the trail!
Heading north from Duluth, you'll pass famous landmarks like Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Lighthouse. You can see Split Rock from the road, though it's well worth stopping to see up close.
Along the drive, there are also a few notable beaches that are well worth stopping at. Iona's Beach is noted for its singing rocks, while Black Beach is known for its strangely beautiful color.
There are plenty of great little towns to stop at along the way for lunch or to spend the night. After all, why pass up a chance to try World's Best Donuts?
Even if you don't make any stops, the North Shore Scenic Drive is absolutely stunning. With the North Woods all around you - and breathtaking peeks at Lake Superior, this famous drive is a no-brainer.
