For the most part, living in Minneapolis is a pretty laid-back lifestyle. Most people have a “live and let live” attitude that makes this city a pretty great place to be… but there are a few unwritten rules that all Minneapolitans abide by. While you won’t get in any true trouble if you break them, you might raise a few eyebrows.
1. Dress in layers.
With the finicky weather, you never know what the day is going to bring. It's best to layer up with a light jacket, a hat, and maybe a pair of gloves - especially if you're going to be spending any part of the day outside.
2. Park your car.
Did you know Minneapolis is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the United States? There are many walkable neighborhoods that are perfect places to park the car and bike or walk. It'll give you a chance to see the city in a new way.
3. Go outside.
Being the City of Lakes, Minneapolitans are proud of our nature areas. From the Chain of Lakes to Minnehaha Falls, there is outstanding natural beauty all around. Even when it's cold, we make the best of it - and you should too.
4. Learn to zipper merge.
The best of us take congested highways and city streets in stride, but every once in a while, it's hard not to get angry at a confused motorist who hasn't quite mastered the art of zipper merging. As a reminder: merge at the end of the lane, one car at a time. Everyone will thank you for it.
5. Be nice.
Hey, it's Minnesota. If there's one thing we're famous for, it's being nice. Just because Minneapolis is the largest city in the state doesn't mean we're immune to friendliness.
6. Crack a book.
Minneapolis has been named the most literate city in the United States. While you definitely don't have to be an English professor to keep up, you want to remain relatively informed about the world. Don't sweat it if reading isn't your thing; there are lots of other great cultural attractions that'll help you fit right in.
7. Clean off your car.
There's nothing worse than driving behind a car with snow flying off of it. We all hate trudging out to our cars early to brush off the newest snowfall, but it's a courtesy that we owe each other. How else are we going to survive the winter?
8. Don't move to St. Paul.
St. Paul is a great city. There are many great neighborhoods brimming with cultural events, restaurants, and amazing people... but it has a different vibe than Minneapolis. Luckily, if you do move there, you'll still just a few miles away from Minneapolis.
9. Relax.
Forbes named Minneapolis the most relaxed city in the United States - and for good reason. We don't have the high-powered hustle of the nation's largest cities, and we like it that way. Things are calmer here and we'd appreciate it if it stayed that way. So relax and take your time getting to know our great city!
Minneapolitans, would you add anything to the list? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!
