This town is full of relaxing fun, river recreation to downtown shopping and dining. Don't forget to check out the falls of the Vermillion River while you're in town.

Just under 40 miles south of Minneapolis, Jordan is a small town of about 5,700 people. Whether you browse a local shop or try out a mom-and-pop restaurant, you'll come away refreshed. After you're fully recuperated, you might want to venture into Minnesota's Largest Candy Store. It's always a busy place, but the variety and novelty is like nothing else in Minnesota.

With a population of about 16,000 people, Red Wing is not the smallest town on this list, but it is among the most beautiful. About 40 miles north of Minneapolis, Buffalo is a bit further away than some of the other towns on this list, but it is more than worth the drive. The town is known for its active art scene that features frequent musical and theatrical performances. The town is also home to a lovely downtown that has several great antique shops. If you're looking to catch a show or do some shopping outside the hustle and bustle of Minneapolis, you may just want to visit Buffalo.

Marine on Marine on St. Croix is a historic town notable for its famous general store. The town was founded in 1839 and has retained much of its early charm ever since. The must-stop spot is Marine General store and it’s attached ice cream shop, General Scoop. They'll both take you back to simpler times, and you'll forget all about the busyness of the city.

What are some of the best small towns near Minneapolis?  

Minneapolis is a beautiful city, but for those of us who prefer not to be smack-dab in the center of a bustling environment, there are always the suburbs and small towns nearby to visit (or move to) instead. Some of our favorite small towns near Minneapolis include little slices of paradise like Lindstrom, which is just 45 minutes away from the city. It’s an adorable town heavily influenced by its Swedish heritage, and it’s worth a day trip (or longer). About a half hour from Minneapolis, there’s the town of Stillwater, a historic Minnesota town that’s sure to please.  

What small towns near Minneapolis are best for families?  

Minneapolis – and its suburbs – is a great place for families. We do have some favorite neighborhoods in Minneapolis for raising a family, as well as some favorite small towns, including gems like Eden Prairie, which has amazing parks and rec as well as great schools. We also love Shoreview and Deephaven (when it comes to neighborhoods close to Minneapolis), and Dellwood is wonderful as well. You’ll probably also want to check out Plymouth, which is also a leader when it comes to education (in addition to being quite safe).  

What are some beautiful places near Minneapolis? 

Life in Minnesota is beautiful, and the same can be said about life in Minneapolis. For nature lovers, Minneapolis is an excellent starting point for all sorts of natural wonders and beautiful places; some of our favorite beautiful places near Minneapolis include Minnehaha Park, which has its very own waterfall, and Lake Harriet, which is a popular destination for outdoorsy folks all over the Midwest. Take a ride on the Grand Rounds Scenic Byway, and then visit beautiful Lake Nokomis for even more! Minneapolis is a gorgeous city, and the surrounding area around it is even more so – no matter where you look.
