By nature, Minnesotans are a peaceful people. We don’t get worked up too often, and when we do, we let it pass quickly and with little notice. But everyone has buttons that they don’t like pushed. For the people of Minneapolis, there are a few sure-fire ways to make us mad. Here are 11 of the biggest:
1. Forgetting — or refusing — to clear off your car.
It only takes a few minutes, and it makes a world of difference. Both for your own safety and for that of other drivers, we would prefer if you cleaned off your car completely after every snowfall or overnight frost for maximum visibility on the road.
2. Insulting our local brews.
Minneapolis is home to many local breweries, around which many events revolve. If you aren't into beer, there are plenty of other great things to enjoy. But it may be for your own good to not insult our local beers.
3. Calling a snow emergency for very little snow.
Snow emergency parking rules are so detailed that it's hard not to be annoyed when one gets called. It's even more annoying to have to move our cars and fight for parking for anything less than a major dumping.
4. Assuming St. Paul and Minneapolis are the same city.
While the Twin Cities are very close, they do have a few differences. The eastern side of the river is a bit quieter and more historic, while Minneapolis has a little more going on at night. Both cities are great, but each has its own charms that are not to be confused.
5. Not stopping to help.
We're not saying you have to stop for every single person in need, but it's always appreciated when you stop to help other motorists. Inevitably, everyone will experience car trouble or a stuck vehicle during their time in Minnesota. It's just part of living here, and helping goes hand in hand with that.
6. Being surprised if we prefer biking to driving.
Minneapolis is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the United States. Many of us take advantage of the trails that crisscross the city, both for health and for convenience. Even in winter, you'll find hearty bikers out traveling the city on two wheels. Just like anywhere, people adapt.
7. Acting shocked that the city is full of art and culture.
Minnesota may often be cast off as a flyover state, but it is anything but. The Twin Cities — Minneapolis in particular — are full of incredible happenings in the art and music worlds. From world-class museums to incredible music venues, you don't have to look hard to take in cultural events here.
8. Asking us to cross town during rush hour.
Seriously, don't ask. It's bad enough commuting home from work. But to cross the entire city? Unthinkable. We'd much prefer to wait a while, then meet up when the traffic dies down.
9. Forgetting our musical history.
There have been many greats who got their start in Minneapolis. From Prince to the Replacements, the city gave birth to legends. The music scene continues to thrive, and anyone who doesn't recognize that probably doesn't know Minneapolis.
10. Going on and on about Super Bowl LII.
You might be excited to watch the Super Bowl, but we have other ideas. Many in Minneapolis are worried about the congestion that the event may cause. When you pair the extra traffic with the rough commutes we already have, it sounds to many of us like a recipe for disaster.
11. Asking us why we'd live in Minneapolis.
People in Greater Minnesota may not see the appeal of living in a large city. And people out of state might not be able to look past the bitter cold. But people who live in Minneapolis live here because of the great people, plentiful activities, and beautiful natural scenery. There's no place we'd rather live.
