Pizza is one of the greater things in life. Whether you like the thinnest crust or the deepest and thickest crust, with varying amounts of sauce, cheese, and toppings, there is a perfect pizza out there for everyone. Pizza can bring people together in a way that most other foods can’t. Minneapolis and Saint Paul are fortunate to have plenty of pizza joints beyond the Pizza Huts and Johns. Here are the 10 essential pizza places you must visit in the Twin Cities:
If you ask most Twin Cities residents about their favorite pizza place, you're definitely going to hear the name Pizza Luce a lot. This small local chain has been serving up perfect pies since 1993, with the first location in downtown Minneapolis. Luce's crust is one of the more unique in the area, and it's also proud to serve vegan and gluten free options for those who are less inclined to eat a pizza piled high with pepperoni and sausage.
Cossetta's pizza defines Saint Paul. Any person visiting Minnesota's capital city to experience the science museum, a hockey game, or a trip to watch Minnesota's government in action has made the stop to this joint. The slices are as large as your face, and you can opt for a side salad... or just keep shoveling pizza in your face. Cossetta's is located at 211 7th St. W, Saint Paul, MN 55102.
Punch is one of the few places in Minneapolis where you could take a native Italian to eat and they won't scream at you for committing pizza sacrilege. There are now a number of locations in the Twin Cities and the surrounding metro area, but every single restaurant uses the same techniques and cooks their pizzas in only 90 seconds in a 900-degree wood burning stove!
Black Sheep has the first coal burning pizza stove in Minnesota. Coal fired pizza has a smokier flavor than pizza straight out of the oven, making it super addictive and unique. The Twin Cities are now lucky to have three Black Sheep locations serving all of the classics with a modern twist.
Galactic Pizza is like Pizza Planet from Toy Story... but in real life. The whimsical pizza place sources all of its ingredients locally and has a variety of vegan options. Galactic's most unique pizza is the Paul Bunyan, which is made with ingredients natural to Minnesota's ecosystem such as morel mushrooms and wild rice. Galactic Pizza is located at 2917 Lyndale Ave., Minneapolis, MN 55408.
An oldie, but a goodie! Leaning Tower of Pizza has proudly been serving Minneapolis since 1952. Any business with that longevity surely must make top-notch classic, no-fuss pizza. This modern pizzeria located in Southwest Minneapolis has won the hearts of many Minneapolitans and it's not hard to see why! With inventive pizzas, such as the Korean BBQ topped with beef short ribs, mozzarella, scallions, arugula, and a sesame-soy vinaigrette, or the Lady Zaza topped with kimchi, Korean sausage, serrano peppers, scallions, and a sesame-soy glaze, you can be sure you've never eaten pizzas like this. Pizzeria Lola is located at 5557 Xerxes Ave. S, Minneapolis, MN 55410.
If there were a contest for a pizzeria's best social media presence, Pizza Nea would win in a heartbeat. Whoever runs their social media is highly opinionated and knows how to connect their feelings to wood-fired, delectable pizza... with hilarious results. Head over to Northeast to grab a pie in Nea's cozy, photography-filled space. You'll be sure to have a good time! Pizza Nea is located at 306 E Hennepin Ave., Minneapolis, MN 55414.
