From waterfalls to scenic overlooks, Minnesota hiking trails lead to some unforgettable places. Excellent trails criss-cross the entire state, making it possible for just about anyone to see something new. In northern Minnesota, one of the most unusual paths is a lesser-known path through the forest that leads to one of the state’s most unusual wonders: a 60-foot-tall magnetic rock that can only be accessed by hiking trail. If you’re interested in exploring Minnesota’s off-the-beaten-path destinations, you’ll love your trip down the Magnetic Rock Trail. Here’s what you’ll find when you get there:
Magnetic Rock Trail is a 3-mile trek through undeveloped, wooded lands near Grand Marais, Minnesota.
Though this path is not considered difficult, it is not paved and may at times be covered by foliage, rocks, or tree roots. Be sure to plan ahead so that you have everything you need to safely hike the trail.
As you walk, you'll be treated by some of the prettiest sights in northern Minnesota. Rolling, tree-covered hills are visible for miles around. In the distance, you can see some of the sparkling waters of northern Minnesota's pristine lakes.
Magnetic Rock contains magnetite, a magnetic mineral that will cause your compass needle to spin. This fact, combined with the rock's soaring 60-foot height, makes this site truly impressive.
Next time you're looking for a unique hike, consider planning a trip to Magnetic Rock. Though it's only accessible by hike, its unique properties make it well worth traveling to see.
