Here in Minnesota, we’re lucky to live in a state with some amazing scenic areas. Southeastern Minnesota is filled with bluffs, the southwest is home to some truly breathtaking prairies and rock formations, and the north is home to countless forests and lakes. It’s impossible to explore every square inch of Minnesota. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get a good view! One of the best ways to see the North Shore in all its glory is by hiking high above the land. You can do just that at Cascade River State Park. Here, 5,050 acres of stunning of Lake Superior and the Sawtooth Mountain views await.
Cascade River State Park is a 5,050-acre park along Minnesota's beautiful North Shore. It's about 100 miles north of Duluth on Highway 61.
This rugged park is known for its incredible scenery. The most popular feature is the choppy, churning Cascade River as it makes its way to Lake Superior. It's a Minnesota must-see!
But there is so much more to explore, including the 3.5-mile Lookout Mountain Loop. This trail peaks at a stunning overlook that features views of Minnesota lakes, forests, and mountains.
The unpaved trail is made up of packed dirt. With a rise of 600 feet, it can be steep in some areas. But most hikers should be able to complete it with proper preparation. You'll be glad you did it when you get to the top...
...and see the vast, forested land of northern Minnesota spread out before you. In the distance, you'll be able to see the low hills of the Sawtooth Mountains under the big, open sky.
You'll also be able to see the sparkling waters of Lake Superior. At 1,200 feet above sea level - and 600 feet above the surrounding area - you'll be able to see for miles.
This view is absolutely gorgeous in every season and during every time of day. Whether you watch the sun rise over the icy water in winter or take in a summer sunset over the tree-covered hills, you'll be in awe at the sheer beauty of Minnesota atop the Lookout Mountain Trail.
