Kilen Woods State Park is a lovely, little-known state park in southern Minnesota, not far from the Iowa border. It's about 160 miles southwest of the Twin Cities, making it a great destination for a weekend excursion for many Minnesotans.
The park is full of quiet beauty. The landscape is mostly made up of prairie and oak savanna. Small creeks flow through it, as well as the larger Des Moines River.
In total, there are 5 miles of trails in Kilen Woods State Park. The terrain is hilly, with a gently rolling landscape. Though it is not particularly rugged, it can be tiring for some hikers. Be sure to wear good shoes and bring plenty of water!
As you hike, lovely prairie wildlife may make itself known to you. Visitors may spot wildflowers and mushrooms on the ground. In the trees, look for birds, squirrels, and chipmunks! This park is full of wildlife as well as scenery.
One trail, in particular, climbs up a hill to offer lovely views of the surrounding landscape. You'll be able to see distant trees, rolling hills, and prairie plants.
While this is a little-known state park, it is certainly worth visiting! The lovely landscape, quietly beautiful views, and peace and quiet will make it one of your new favorite spots!
