As the “Land of 10,000 Lakes,” Minnesota certainly has no shortage of great lakes to visit. If you are looking for a true Minnesota adventure, you must experience the Lake Mille Lacs Scenic Byway. Follow your exploration around the loop with a short hike to Lake Mille Lacs and see why Minnesota is famous for its lakes.
The Lake Mille Lacs Scenic Byway spans 68 miles around Mille Lacs.
You can choose to just drive along the byway and take in the scenery, or you can make a whole day out of it and check out some of the many great stops on the byway. There are observation pull-offs, parks, beaches, and some historical sites.
Mille Lacs is the 2nd largest lake in Minnesota.
This amazing lake is popular among all nature lovers. Whether you love hiking, biking, birdwatching, or kayaking, there is something for everyone here.
Stop at Father Hennepin State Park for a hike to the shores of Lake Mille Lacs.
Father Hennepin State Park is located on the southeast shore of the lake. The park is 320 acres and includes campsites, trails, fishing sites, beaches, and more.
Take the Father Hennepin State Park Loop trail for stunning views of the lake.
This two-mile loop trail, also known as the Hiking Club Trail, will take you past the swimming beaches and through the beautiful forest surrounding the lake.
Take the Pope's Point Trail to take in the view from the overlook.
This trail is just a quick .5-mile walk to the Pope Point Overlook. You can enjoy the peaceful view of the lake and spend some time looking for any of the amazing birds that call Mille Lacs home.
After you finish hiking, enjoy a picnic on the beach.
Stop in the picnic area by the beach and enjoy a scenic lunch. Make sure you spend time relaxing in the sand and swimming with the whole family!
