Here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes, we have almost as many quirky roadside attractions decorating our highways and byways. Some celebrate Minnesota’s natural resources, like the countless giant walleye that grace our roadsides. Others, like statues of Paul Bunyan and Babe, celebrate Minnesota’s culture. Still other attractions, like Chisolm’s Iron Man, point to the state’s industries. And some are just plain weird: Ed’s Museum and the World’s Biggest Ball of Twine, to name a few.

In Blue Earth, Minnesota, each of these four categories combine at the giant roadside statue of the Jolly Green Giant. It celebrates Minnesota’s agriculture, reminds visitors of the state’s homegrown businesses, and has become a state symbol almost as iconic as Paul Bunyan. The Jolly Green Giant Statue is found in Blue Earth, Minnesota. This is about 140 miles southwest of the Twin Cities, close to the Iowa border. The 55-foot-tall statue serves as a welcome to the town.

The statue was built in 1979 with permission from the Green Giant company, headquartered about 70 miles away in Le Sueur. It was built with money from local businesses in an effort to attract attention to the town. It still receives many visitors today.
