Little Falls is a charming little town nestled along the Mississippi River in Central Minnesota that is full to the brim with history. Not only is this unexpected gem one of the oldest towns in Minnesota, but visitors will also find that there are many landmarks, museums, beautiful state parks, and stately historic mansions that are well worth taking the time to explore and enjoy during their stay. Three of the most notable historic landmarks in Little Falls, Minnesota are listed below:
Charles Lindbergh was a pioneering aviator most well known for being the first person ever to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean non-stop. He was also an inventor, an author, and a passionate environmental activist. For the price of admission, you can take a tour through his boyhood home-turned-museum. There are guided tours of the 1906 home that leave every hour or you can take a self-guided tour at your own pace.
Aviation and history buffs alike won’t want to miss this journey back through time as you learn about Lindbergh’s first flight up the Mississippi River, examine original artifacts from his home, and even view his family’s restored 1916 Saxon Six automobile. You’ll uncover his fascinating contributions to aviation, literature, science, conservation, and more. You can even enjoy a picnic in the shade at the adjoined Charles Lindbergh State Park after your tour! You can view the Charles Lindbergh House website for more information or to book a tour.
The Linden Hill Historic Estate is home to two historic and breathtaking mansions nestled along the Mississippi River, built simultaneously in 1898: the Weyerhaeuser and Musser mansions. The Weyerhaeuser (green) mansion is a nationally recognized historic home and doubles as the Linden Hill Museum. The Musser (white) mansion is also very popular as a lodging and wedding venue, and when you see the gorgeous grounds these stunning mansions sit upon, it will be quite easy to see why! Be sure to leave ample time to explore the beautiful surroundings of the estate, and don't forget to stop by Laura Jane's Gift Shoppe for a souvenir or two before you leave! Last but not least, history and military lovers alike will be thrilled to stop by the Minnesota Military and Veterans Museum located only a short 15-minute drive north of Little Falls. This museum holds an incredible 80,000 military-related artifacts, with 60 of those being large artifacts such as tanks, aircraft, other military vehicles, and artillery. There are also many indoor and outdoor exhibits, such as the Featured Veteran that rotates every few months, Women in the Military, and other temporary and permanent exhibits. You can even step inside a 40 & 8 boxcar (quite rare to come across these days) which was used to transport American troops and horses in France during the first World War. For a list of current exhibits and upcoming special events, be sure to take a look at the Minnesota Military and Veterans Museum website.
